Getting to Know the Creative Force Behind Chasing Dreams Productions

Behind every artistic vision, there is someone willing to take the risk of dreaming bigger. In the case of Chasing Dreams Productions, that creative force is Delfina Perret—Artistic Director, performer, and passionate advocate for artists finding their voice and space in the industry.

With honesty, warmth, and an undeniable determination, Delfi opened up about her journey from performer to director, the lessons Broadway taught her, and the importance of creating opportunities instead of waiting for them to arrive.

If you could say something to 10-year-old Delfi, what would it be?

DP: If I could speak to my younger self I would tell her to not be afraid of failure. Just do it. Stop procrastinating. You already have everything you need to do it; you just have to believe in yourself and fight for it.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a performer and as a director?

DP: Oh my God… the biggest lesson I’ve learned as a performer is to give 100% as soon as you can. When you’re in a project, don’t wait until tech week or until you’re behind the curtains—go 100% from the beginning. And also, close my mouth and listen.

As a director, I’ve learned to believe in myself. Just because you think you can’t do something doesn’t mean you actually can’t. For a long time, I was the one stopping myself, but I realized that by trying that I could do it.

How was the process of changing direction in your life from performer to director? What made you take that path?

DP: At some point in my life, I realized that nobody was going to come and get me if I didn’t show up for myself. Nobody was going to create opportunities for me if I stayed waiting. I understood that if I wanted to stay active, I needed to create my own projects. I realized I can create all the opportunities I want—I don’t have to wait for someone else to give them to me.

When we finished AMDA and we were all trying to figure out what came next I wasn’t going to auditions, so I knew I had to create something for myself. We knew there was a necessity for international performers to show themselves. And honestly, there still is. I knew I wanted to do something about it, but I also knew I couldn’t do it alone, I wasn’t ready. That’s when I approached Cami and said, “Hey, let’s do something.” Cami brought up an idea from a show she had done before, we gave it a new twist, mixed both of our visions together, and that’s how Chasing Dreams Productions was born. We wanted to create opportunities for our friends and other international artists.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from studying and working in the Broadway industry?

DP: The most important lesson is that the way you present yourself matters. How you show yourself to the world is important because people will judge you from their first impression—and sometimes you don’t get more than one opportunity to book a job. The first impression is what counts.

But another thing I learned is that your work speaks for you. Even if someone doesn’t hire you because of a first impression, they will hire you because of your work ethic. If you work hard, you  give 100%, people are going to want to work with you because they know they can rely on you. You have to be reliable and show that you do the work.

How would you describe yourself in three words as an Artistic Director?

DP: Strict… very strict (laughs). Creative. And communicative. I think I’m good at creating spaces where people feel comfortable opening up.

Can you share a memory with Chasing Dreams Productions that still stays with you?

DP: Honestly, my favorite memory is Cami and I sitting at the Starbucks in Columbus Circle on 59th Street, creating the show for the first time. It was the first time we gathered to brainstorm everything. I still have the notebook I used that day with all the notes written inside. That notebook is one of the most precious things I have.

What stands out most about Delfina is not only her discipline or artistic vision, but the honesty with which she approaches her work. Her story is a reminder that sometimes the biggest shift in an artist’s life happens when they stop waiting for permission and decide to create their own opportunities.

And through Chasing Dreams Productions, that is exactly what she continues to do: creating spaces where artists feel seen, heard, and inspired to chase their dreams fearlessly.
